Will My Loved One Qualify for Medicaid?

August 3, 2011Elder Law, Medicaid

If your loved one is without health insurance or has many medical bills insurance doesn’t pay, you may be wondering if Medicaid can help. It’s important to note that this beneficial tool is only offered to those who financially or medically qualify for the assistance.  We’ve taken the time to outline information on the use of Medicaid, so that you can get your loved one the help that he or she needs.  If you have any additional questions, or if you’d like to explore Medicaid and what it has to offer, contact an elder law attorney.

Strict Financial Guidelines

It’s important to note that Medicaid was developed in order to assist individuals with low income.  The strict requirements must be met in order to benefit from the services and aid.  Each state has its own specific requirements and regulations.

How low of an income must your loved one have to benefit from this service?  Most states require individuals to have an income level that is below the federal poverty line.

Medicaid Planning

Just because your loved one is on a fixed income doesn’t mean that he or she will automatically qualify.  If your loved one has many assets in his or her name, this will hinder his or her chance of being eligible.  However, there is much an elder law attorney can do to help protect and preserve assets.  The sooner you get good advice, the more assets you can protect.

Explore Medicare Eligibility

If you find that your loved one is unable to take part in this program, it’s a good idea to take a look at Medicare.  This is a federally funded program that helps many elderly and disabled individuals, regardless of income.

Be Sure to Get Good Legal Advice

It’s a great idea to get the help of an elder law attorney.  He or she will be able to advise you on the enrollment process and can offer insight and information that is beneficial.

If you have any questions, or if you’d like to discuss Medicaid and see how it can help your loved one with his or healthcare needs, consult with a qualified elder law attorney.
