Life In Corning, NY

Corning is a city of just over 11,000 people as of the most recent census. The city is located along the Chemung River and spans 3.1 square miles, including .2 square miles of water. It is considered to be a part of Steuben County, NY. There is also a town of Corning, which is also in Steuben County and which has a population of close to 6,500 people as of the last census count. Both the town and the city are named after a financier named Erastus Corning. Erastus Corning was also a railroad executive as well as an investor. A company he owned a stake in helped to develop the town and the city which now bear his name.

Corning is best known for Corning Glass Works, which is a company that manufactures both glass and ceramic products. Corning Glass Works has incorporated as Corning Incorporated, and it is a Fortune 500 company.

The Corning Museum of Glass, which is located in Corning, is a popular tourist destination because it contains one of the most comprehensive collections of glass objects in the entire world. The Rockwell Museum is another important museum located in Corning. It contains a collection assembled over the course of 40 years by the Rockwell Family. The collection is focused on Western American sculptures and paintings.

Because Corning is home to multiple museums, American Style Magazine has repeatedly named Corning one of top 25 small city art destinations within the United States. Corning has earned other honors as well, including being listed on Rand McNally’s list of the best small towns in American in 2013.

Seniors in Corning, NY

In Corning, NY, 15.5 percent of households are seniors 65 or older who live alone. Seniors often face challenges due to the effects of age, especially if they live independently without a caregiver.  Steuben County, which is the county that Corning is located in, has an Office for the Aging which provides support and services to seniors in the area.

There are three different locations where seniors can go to for services provided by the Office for the Aging.  These are found at:

  • Steuben County OFA at the Senior Citizen’s Center: One Park Lane, Corning, NY 14830
  • Steuben County OFA at the Senior Citizen’s Center: 20 Broadway Mall, Hornell, NY 14843

Seniors can visit any of these offices to find support services, assistance in understanding benefits and programs, and other aid that they may require to remain independent as long as possible and to improve their quality of life.

If seniors need to seek nursing home care once they can no longer live independently, Caring.com lists six nursing homes in the Steuben County area for seniors to choose from.

Elder Law & Estate Planning

Individuals who believe nursing care may become necessary should make a plan to pay for the costs of care prior to the time that nursing services are needed. Medicaid is the only insurer which provides payments for routine nursing care required by many as a result of aging. Qualifying for Medicaid requires advanced planning to protect assets, unless you want to spend down your wealth before Medicaid begins paying for a nursing home. The Law Office of Michael Robinson, P.C. can provide you with help in qualifying for Medicaid coverage.

We also provide many other elder law and estate planning services including:

  • Probate avoidance
  • The creation of wills and trusts
  • Incapacity planning, including power of attorney and advanced directives
  • Retirement and financial planning
  • Legacy planning

These are just a few of the many different ways that our legal team provides help to you. At any stage of life, no matter your income or goals for the future, you should have a plan for your money and your family. We help you to make that plan, as well as to maintain autonomy and control over your future as you age.

Courts in Corning, NY

Avoidance of probate and eliminating the need for guardianship proceedings are two of the main goals of many people who come to an estate planning attorney. Many prefer to stay out of court because of cost concerns or because they want to spare themselves and their families the complications of legal proceedings at a time of medical emergency or grief.

Despite this, there are times when court proceedings become necessary. If court is required, choosing the correct court is very important. For those in Corning, the Steuben County surrogate’s court system is likely the location where probate, guardianship, and other court proceedings will take place.

Steuben County is in the Seventh Judicial District.  The surrogate’s court is located in the Steuben County Courthouse, which can be found at 3 East Pulteney Square, Bath, NY 14810.   The hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, excluding court holidays. The telephone number to reach the surrogate’s court is 607-622-8221.
